College Admissions Often the material for a âwow essayâ comes from a âwow factor.â Still, you can write an amazingly engaging essay, even if your activities donât place you among the modern gods of extracurriculars. Additionally, incredible âwow factorsâ can sometimes lead to unexpected admissions . But with a wow essay, youâre likely just getting in to Harvard when your grades/scores/activities are on par. If you want to write about a personal challenge, emphasize what you learned and how you grewâ"if you dwell on the details, the essay will not achieve its purpose. Unless enough time has passed since the experience, the essay can be too personal, too much of a rant, or just too hard to read. One rep said the general rule of thumb was no essays on the Four Dsâ"Drugs, dating, death, and divorceâ"but you get the idea. To be clear, a âwow essayâ is not the same as a âwow factor.â But they are related. A âwow factorâ is an activity or accomplishment that you achieve before sitting down to type that first draft. A âwow essayâ is a piece of writing that arrests the reader with its ideas and narrative. If they could, colleges would welcome you to campus and ask you questions for hoursâ"but if they did that, no one would be admitted to college until they were 43. To accelerate the process, they want you to talk on paper; let them get to know you by giving them a guided tour of your heart, your brain, and your life. If you succeed, they will look up from reading your essay, and be surprised you arenât in the room; indeed, they will swear the chair next to them is warm from your having sat in it since Tuesday. One such example, shared by Tufts, takes the reader from the studentâs love of origami to a passion for science in less than 250 words. Some colleges require a supplemental essay in addition to the personal essay. Typically, admissions pros note, these essays are shorter and focus on answering a specific question posed by the college. âYou can think of the essay as the soul of the application. When I say they are ânot very goodâ, I mean they are either boring, impenetrable, melodramatic, or all of the above. Still another essay I had a student complaining about how she didnât like traditional school so switched to homeschooling. But here, wouldnât colleges wonder whether she could handle âtraditionalâ college? Hiring an essay coach to help craft college essays is common in many well-off communities â" itâs not unusual for a coach to charge $1,000 or more for their services. But every student, regardless of their zip code or the amount of cash in their parent/guardianâs bank account, should have access to a trusted adult who can provide essay help. Perfectionâ"in college admission and in lifeâ"is often overvalued. What will distinguish your writing and your application is your unique voice. While a strong essay may elevate a candidate in a crowded field, she says it doesnât make or break an application. âThe essay really needs to be the studentâs work. I encourage students to ask people close to them to read the essay and ask âwould you know this essay is about me? But make sure itâs still your voice,â Richardson says. While St. Johns College may ask for more in-depth answers, other schools value brevity, challenging students to write concisely. Be willing to take risks, be vulnerable and share your truth. The readers will appreciate the opportunity to learn more about you, and you will get to know yourself better as well. But the same is true for college essays, as Orwell doubtlessly would have realized if he were reanimated and handed him a sheaf of Common Applications. The sad truth is that most college application essays are not very good.
